"Ageless Beauty: Makeup Tips & Tricks for Women Over 40"

When Rita walked out of a makeup counter one afternoon after spending $150, she felt nothing short of deflated.
That experience became the start of her journey into the world of mature age makeup — a journey that changed not only her appearance but her confidence, and ultimately led her to become a specialist in makeup for women over 40.
Why Traditional Makeup Counters Get It Wrong
Many women over 40 have shared Rita’s frustration. The fluorescent lighting in most department stores distorts color tones, leading to mismatched foundations and overly shiny finishes. Rita explains, “Those horrible fluorescent lights have no daylight whatsoever, so you walk out looking completely different in natural light.”
The sales-driven nature of these counters often means staff usually in their 20s push trendy, shimmery products that don’t flatter mature skin. Shimmer exaggerates fine lines and wrinkles, making the skin appear older rather than radiant.
The Turning Point: Learning the Art of Mature Makeup
Determined to find real answers, Rita went back to TAFE at 39 years old to study makeup artistry.
“I spent nine hours with her,” Rita recalls. “I learned more in those nine hours than in three months of study.
It completely changed the way I understood beauty over 40.”
Makeup Over 40: Bringing Warmth and Life Back Into the SkinAs we age, skin tone often changes and becomes slightly more yellow due to sun exposure and pigment shifts. Cool tones that once looked flattering in the ’80s or ’90s can now wash you out.
Rita’s golden rule?
That might mean saying goodbye to blue eyeliners or frosty pinks and hello to peach, coral, bronze, and earthy neutrals that bring warmth and vitality.
The New Foundation Rules for Mature Skin
Forget the matte look of your younger years.
Opt for lightweight, luminous foundations or tinted moisturizers that enhance your skin’s natural glow. Many modern formulas include SPF protection, reducing the need for layering multiple products underneath.
Preparation Is Everything
Rita swears by gentle exfoliation once a week, even something as simple as bicarb soda mixed with cleanser can help smooth texture. Her golden prep rule:
Choose either a hydrating moisturizer or a primer (preferably with SPF) to create a balanced, even base.
Eyes That Lift, Not Sink
For women over 40, the key is matte eyeshadows in soft, neutral shades. Creamy or glittery formulas tend to crease on mature eyelids. Apply a neutral base first, even a face powder will before adding soft definition to the outer corners for a lifted effect.
When it comes to mascara, it’s all about the brush, not the brand
Brows, Glasses, and Magnification Magic
If you struggle to see while applying makeup, invest in a lighted magnifying mirror (10x) or use “half glasses” that sit low on your nose for precision work.
Lips That Look Fresh and Youthful
Full-coverage lipsticks tend to feather into fine lines. Instead, Rita recommends a modern approach:
Avoid overly matte or drying formulas; instead, go for creamy, hydrating lip products in natural rose, peach, or soft berry shades.
Blush for a Lifted Look
Where you place your blush can instantly reshape your face.
Avoid applying too close to the nose — about three fingers’ width away is the sweet spot.
Kind Beauty Choices: Vegan and Organic Options
For women looking for vegan or cruelty-free brands, Rita recommends Inika, an Australian-made, certified organic line.
The Takeaway: Makeup Should Reflect You
Makeup after 40 isn’t about covering up — it’s about enhancing who you are now.
