Kings Park is one of those places Perth people take for granted until a friend visits from interstate and loses their mind over it. Then you remember: oh right, we have this.
But here is the thing nobody tells you before you pack the cheese board and drive up Fraser Avenue. Where you park matters more than you would think.
Get it wrong and you are trudging across half the park in thongs carrying a basket, arriving sweaty and slightly resentful before the afternoon has even started.
So here are the spots worth knowing, from someone who has spent more than a few evenings up there watching the sun go down over the river.
State War Memorial Precinct. Yes, the one that
I know, I know. It is the obvious one. But there is a reason people keep coming back to this stretch of lawn overlooking the Swan. The city skyline, the river bending west, the light doing something ridiculous at golden hour, it earns its reputation.
What most guides do not mention is how easy the access is. You can park right along Fraser Avenue and be on the grass in a couple of minutes. No odyssey through the park required. If you are planning something special, an anniversary, a proposal, a birthday that deserves a decent backdrop, arrive about 45 minutes before sunset. You will get your pick of spot before the after work crowd filters in.
Fraser Avenue Lookout: Better than it looks on first glance The main lookout platform gets busy, and fair enough, the view is genuinely great. But if you walk just a few metres past the obvious spot, you will find patches of lawn that sit clear of the foot traffic while keeping the skyline right in front of you.
Parking here is easy, which makes it a good option when you want atmosphere without overthinking it. First dates, casual catch-ups with friends, a quick picnic after work it handles all of it without fuss.
Kaarta Garup Lookout, the one locals actually use
This is the spot I would tell a friend about if I wanted them to feel like they had found something. It is quieter than the memorial precinct, noticeably so, and the view across the river has a different quality to it. More expansive, somehow more peaceful.
Parking is close, the walk in is short, and you are unlikely to be surrounded by strangers. It is the kind of place where a picnic actually turns into a proper conversation rather than a performance. Good for anniversaries, good for moments you do not particularly want an audience for.
The Botanic Garden: If you want nature rather than skyline
Not everyone wants to stare at the CBD while they eat. Fair. The Botanic Garden offers something different. Native wildflowers, winding paths, patches of lawn that feel genuinely tucked away. Come in spring, roughly August through October, and the colour is remarkable. Morning visits are worth the earlier start as it is cooler, quieter, and the garden feels like it is still waking up.
Access off Fraser Avenue is straightforward, and it does not take long to find a spot that feels like yours for the afternoon.
Federation Walkway surrounds, good for groups The treetop walkway gets the attention, but the lawns around it are underrated for a picnic. Particularly on weekdays, it stays calm up there. The setup works well if your group likes a bit of movement. Picnic first, walk after, or the other way around. Easy parking keeps everything feeling relaxed rather than logistically complicated. A few practical notes Wind is a real factor up on the escarpment, so look for a spot with some tree cover if you are planning anything elaborate. Late afternoon light is kinder to food, to faces, and to the general mood than harsh midday sun. Check whether there is anything on near the memorial before you head up. Big events shift the parking situation quickly, and arriving to a full car park takes the shine off things. Parking fees vary by zone, so read the signs when you arrive. It is Kings Park, not a conspiracy, but it will save you a fine. The park has been here for over a century, and it is not going anywhere. But an evening up there with the right company, the right spot, and a bit of decent food? That one is worth planning properly.
